As part of its cultural programme, the FIFA World Football Museum invites you to the next event in the Football Cinema series. At 19:30 on Wednesday 6 February 2019, we will be screening ‘Tom Meets Zizou’, a moving documentary about the extraordinary career of talented footballer Thomas Broich.
After first making a name for himself as a 22-year-old second division player in Bavaria in 2003, Broich is soon being touted as the future of the German national team alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski.
His love of life, literature and moral reasoning lead the media to dub him “the alternative footballer” and give him nicknames including ‘Mozart’ and the ‘New Netzer’.
Thomas Broich increasingly has difficulties with authoritarian coaches and stops identifying with the sport. His unique character and the high expectations of fans and the media suddenly begin to work against him and his career starts to falter.
By 2009 Broich is close to calling time on his professional career when he has an even better idea: to rekindle his love of football and regain his confidence far from his homeland.
